6.4. Printing A Document

The "Open" command can be invoked 3 ways:

No matter how you do this, the print dialog will appear.

The top section of this dialog allows you to print to a printer (default) or print to a file.

Below the radio button labled "Print to a printer", is a list of printers connected to the computer.

The number of printers available will vary depending on the computer. In this example, there are 4 printers (3 are visible). All the printers are connected directly to the computer. Your system may have network printers listed. If you do not know which printer to use, you are probably best off using the default value (lp). If you want to print to another printer, simply click on the printer of your choice.

If you want to print your output into a postscript file, select "Print to File". You can now use the "Browse" button to locate the files destination. As an alternative, you can enter the absolute path and filename for your new file.

Under Options, you can select either to print the whole document (the default), or selected pages. If you select the "Print Selected Pages" option, you will be given the opportunity to select your start and end pages in the text boxes provided.

The next section allows you to determine if the document is printed in forward order (Print first page first), or reverse order (Print last page first).

The next section allows you to select color or greyscale printing. If you do not have a color printer, this feature has no effect.

The bottom box of this section, allows you to set the number of copies. You can either enter the number directly into the box, or use the arrows to adjust the number. KWord can print a maximum of 99 copies at once.

The left side of the print dialog, allows you to set the page size and the direction of print. Any differences between the page formatted in the document view, and the page size and shape selected here, may result in truncated output. To prevent this, you should make these paper settings match your document settings.

When you are satisfied with your selections, you can click "OK" to print.

If you click on "Cancel", the printing will be aborted.
