Works with UTF-8 text mode terminals or windows like xterm.
Supports independent mix of text encoding and terminal encoding;
can edit UTF-8 text in a Latin-1 terminal or Latin-1 text in a
UTF-8 terminal.
File encoding auto-detection (Latin-1, UTF-8, UTF-16, East Asian encodings).
UTF-16 encoded files with BOM will be handled transparently and
written back in UTF-16.

especially occasional Han character input for not CJK speaking users.
