Background File Format Detection Options
normally checks the formats of files as a background process while you work. For certain types of devices, this can be disabled to prevent delays in the user interface. When this is disabled for a given type of file, will not automatically analyze files to determine their data format, but will instead use only the file extension (if present) to guess what format the file is. This guess is used only to determine whether or not the file should be shown or hidden in the File List.

Regardless of these preferences, whenever reads a file, it will analyze the data in the file to determine the actual file format. never guesses at file formats.

NOTE: Contrary to popular belief, the format of a file is not determined by the file name. Renaming a file to a different name will never make the file any more readable by an application which does not support the format of the data in the file.

Floppy Disks - when checked, will analyze the types of all files on a floppy as a background task. This is not recommended because floppy disk access can slow your system down considerably during normal use.

Hard Disks and Network Connections - when checked, analyzes the types of all files on the given device as a background task. If you are using a very low speed WAN (Wide Area Network), you will probably want to uncheck this checkbox to avoid delays caused by the slow network connection.

CD-ROM Disks - when checked, analyzes the types of all files on CD-ROM's and other read-only devices as a background task. This setting defaults to being unchecked. If you have very fast read-only devices, you may want to enable this setting.

Enable automatic edge scrolling... - this checkbox will enable (checked) or disable (unchecked) 's AutoScroll feature.

Adjust cursor by... - the number of pixels to scroll when when cursor is moved to the edge of the screen. When automatic edge scrolling is enabled, checks to see if the cursor is at an edge, and if so, it causes a scrolling operation. This value determines how much the cursor is moved away from the edge of the screen each time this happens.
